The meeting, which brought together the main players in the two sectors, provided an opportunity to discuss several measures to be taken to improve the organization of this important industrial segment and boost its production capacity to meet the needs of the national market in terms of quantity and quality, at competitive prices, notes the same source. Nearly 70 public and private economic operators, including producers, subcontractors, exporters and others involved in the two sectors, took part in the meeting, highlighting the strong potential of local producers to fully satisfy the needs of the national market for various product categories, particularly clothing and footwear. According to the same press release, various structural constraints that continue to hamper the development of Algeria's textile and leather sectors were also addressed, including "the lack of qualified manpower, customs and fiscal taxes applied to imported raw materials, the absence of industrial zones specially dedicated to these sectors, the lack of specialized laboratories for the conformity checks required for export operations, as well as the problem of the informal market" through unfair competition and counterfeiting practices that have a very negative impact on the real productive sphere. Responding to the various concerns raised by players in the two sectors, the Minister of Industry ensured the nationwide establishment of training centres specialized in trades related to the textile and leather industries, to make up for the shortage of skilled workers in this field. While stressing the need to safeguard jobs in this sector, the Minister also stressed the importance for all operators in the various industrial segments, including textiles and leather, to structure and organize themselves through groupings or clusters, which will act as an interface for the public authorities with a view to their involvement in the decision-making process. In this sense, he added, these clusters are also expected to act as a force for proposals to set an operational roadmap for the revival and development of the textile and leather industries, to satisfy local needs, increase their integration rates and move towards exports. In the same context, the Minister emphasized the importance of establishing centres of excellence in the sectors and coordinating efforts between players in the industry, whether in production or product marketing, including through e-commerce.
