Hydrocarbons: Equinor wants to increase its investments in Algeria

Minister of State Mohamed Arkab received Philippe Mathieu, Executive Vice President of Equinor, to discuss strengthening energy cooperation between Algeria and the Norwegian group. Present in Algeria since 2004, Equinor aims to expand its partnership into strategic areas, including petrochemicals, carbon emission reduction, and the development of low-carbon fuels. The joint projects in In Salah and In Amenas, carried out with British Petroleum, are cited as examples of success.

Arkab highlighted the advantages of the new hydrocarbons law, which offers guarantees and incentives to foreign investors, and emphasized opportunities in research, training, and technology. Equinor expressed interest in strengthening its presence in Algeria, praising the country's reliability as an energy partner.

This visit is part of a broader trend of renewed interest in the Algerian hydrocarbon sector. In 2025, giants such as ExxonMobil, Chevron, TotalEnergies, Eni, and QatarEnergy participated in tenders or entered into bilateral negotiations. The first tender in over ten years resulted in the award of five out of six zones, with a total investment of $936 million.

Bilateral agreements have also been signed, notably with Occidental Petroleum, Eni ($1.35 billion), Chevron, and Shell. This renewed attractiveness is based on legislative reform, political stability, exploration potential, and Algeria's geostrategic position near European markets seeking energy diversification.
