Faced with an exceptional overproduction of potatoes in Algeria, the Ministry of Agriculture has implemented an emergency measure consisting of storing a large quantity of tubers to prevent prices from collapsing and to preserve farmers' incomes. At the same time, processing units will be set up in the east, west, and centre of the country to regulate the sector in the long term. The public group Agrolog currently has a stock of 120,000 tons, but selling prices are very low, at 15-20 DZD/kg, compared to a purchase cost of 60 DA. National production exceeds 6 million tons, while consumption is estimated at 5 million, making processing and export essential. CNIFPT President Ahcène Ghedmani welcomes the ministry's intervention but warns of the risks associated with the next harvests, which could further exacerbate the fall in prices and jeopardize the viability of producers. He calls for better organization of the sector, particularly through the establishment of stable agricultural contracts and the creation of industrial zones dedicated to processing. A meeting with the minister is planned to discuss solutions to prevent a decline in cultivated areas and ensure the sector's long-term viability.
