Considered as a strategic alternative for the development of the non-hydrocarbon national economy, agriculture is a sector that has seen significant successes in recent years, particularly in terms of the availability of agricultural products. Nevertheless, many challenges remain to be taken up.
For the economist El Houari Tigharsi, the country must ensure food security. Security “which can only be obtained by diversification of the economy given the huge potential that Algeria has to develop strategic cultures, especially in the south of the country”.
In this context, the expert expects revenues of up to $80 billion if 4 million hectares are cultivated in the coming years.
Tigharsi also highlighted the pivotal role of the knowledge economy in boosting strategic industries, stressing the need for “deep reform of the education system, higher education sector and scientific research to build a non-hydrocarbon economic system”.
