Sonelgaz and Elsewedy Electric seal a strategic partnership in the energy sector
On Thursday, April 17, 2025, in Algiers, Société nationale de l'électricité et du gaz (Sonelgaz)( National Electricity and Gas Company) and the Egyptian group Elsewedy Electric signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen economic cooperation between Algeria and Egypt. The ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, in the presence of Algerian Minister Mohamed Arkab and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati.
The signing of this strategic agreement comes against a backdrop of diversification of external partnerships and promotion of foreign investment in Algeria, aligned with the guidelines laid down by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune. It aims to strengthen Sonelgaz's international presence while consolidating continental energy cooperation, particularly with sister and partner countries.
Initialled by Sonelgaz Chairman and CEO Mourad Adjal and Elsewedy Electric Executive Chairman Ahmed El Sewedy, the memorandum defines a general framework for cooperation in several strategic segments:
The manufacture and marketing of energy equipment, particularly high-voltage equipment;
Engineering, design, and construction of energy infrastructures;
Development of joint ventures in foreign markets;
The exchange of expertise and the training of human resources in both companies.
A joint commission, made up of representatives from both parties, will monitor the implementation of actions planned under this agreement and identify new prospects for collaboration.
This initiative follows Sonelgaz's CEO's visit to Cairo from February 8 to 10, 2025. On that occasion, Mourad Adjal held several meetings with Egyptian energy sector executives, including those from Elsewedy Electric, a major player in cable manufacturing, energy infrastructure engineering and construction, and the development of integrated technological solutions.
This partnership illustrates both countries' desire to build mutually beneficial cooperation in strategic areas and confirms Sonelgaz's positioning as a key player in the development and integration of energy systems in Africa.
