Vocational education and training: The need to match training to jobs

Vocational training is undergoing major readjustments in line with the successive changes in the national economy. This sector, which trains the human resources destined to be employed by economic enterprises, intends to catch up on the gaps and delays it has accumulated, which made it an entity little in tune with the labour market and employability criteria.

For the start of the 2024/2025 school year, more than 600,000 teaching places were offered in 1,225 vocational training establishments nationwide, with 22 new establishments in the pipeline. This offer includes training for people with special needs, housewives, and programs tailored to young people in rural areas and recipients of unemployment benefits to facilitate their professional integration.

Currently, 440 specialities are available for diploma courses and 146 for short qualifying courses, covering 23 professional branches adapted to the specific characteristics of the regional economy. New training courses have emerged, notably in strategic agriculture (cereals, oilseeds, saffron) and industry, with the maintenance of railroads and seawater desalination units. These specialities meet the needs of national economic development, such as the transport of raw materials and water security.

The Ministry of Vocational Training has defined priority branches, including agriculture, agri-food, digitization, construction, electricity, the hotel industry, the environment and renewable energies. New specialities, such as industrial maintenance, computer graphics, tourism and audiovisual have been introduced in the South. Partnerships with local companies, particularly in the oil and industrial sectors, have been established to strengthen the match between training and the job market.

Faced with the challenges of economic diversification, Algeria strives to adapt its training system to the growing needs of businesses, emphasising basic training in specialized centres and continuing education to update workers' skills. The aim is to guarantee a skilled, competitive workforce, adapted to developments in the national and international markets.
