A strategic industrial project to reduce imports of school supplies
The Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI) has presented an initiative to achieve self-sufficiency in school supplies and reduce the import bill, estimated at between $70 and $80 million per year. The project, in the wilaya of Bordj Bou Arreridj, represents a major investment opportunity with a potential market of 13.5 million pupils and students.
During a meeting at SAFEX, AAPI announced that it had registered 80 project intentions in this sector, for a total investment of 8.57 billion dinars and the creation of 8,831 direct jobs. The industrial hub will cover an area of 8 hectares, focus on producing supplies not manufactured locally, and replace imports.
Developing the industrial fabric and integrating SMEs
The project also aims to integrate SMEs into the production chain, from raw material processing to distribution. It aims to create an environment conducive to technology transfer and strengthening national industrial capacities. In addition to its economic impact, it will guarantee a stable supply to the market at affordable prices, while complying with international standards.
This initiative is part of a wider plan to develop specialized industrial clusters, including a leather and footwear cluster in Médéa, a textile cluster in Relizane and a spare parts manufacturing cluster in Oran.
A booming market and a strategic opportunity
With 450,000 new pupils a year, the school supplies market is experiencing strong growth. In 2022, spending on school supplies reached 46 billion dinars, double the 2011 figure. Despite 896 local companies, Algeria remains largely dependent on imports from China (45%), Malta (14.2%), and other European and Asian countries.
Against this backdrop, local development of school supplies manufacturing is becoming a strategic priority. An average investment project in this sector is estimated at 107.1 million dinars, with 73 direct jobs over an area of 4,771 m². This market also offers export potential to Africa, strengthening Algeria's position in the region.
