The Wilaya of El Oued is set to break a new record for off-season potato production for the 2025-2026 agricultural season. The Agricultural Chamber's services are forecasting a harvest of over 10.5 million quintals, or more than 1.05 million tons, from an area of 35,000 hectares.

The Wilaya of El Oued confirms its strategic role in national agriculture by maintaining its leading position in potato production, accounting for over 45% of the country's total output. This season, the crop covers more than a third of the land under cultivation, or about 100,000 hectares, marking a 2,000-hectare increase on the previous season.

This expansion is the result of support measures set up by the Department of Agriculture, aimed at assisting farmers while preserving consumer purchasing power. Production is concentrated in five agricultural communities—Hassi Khalifa, Ourmas, Taghzout, Reguiba, and Nakhla—which provide more than 90% of the local supply.

With an average yield of 300 to 350 quintals per hectare and a wide variety of crops, El Oued accounts for 60% of the value of local crop production. This performance is part of the national policy of food self-sufficiency and lower imports, strengthening the country's food security.
