The public group Sonarem has announced significant progress in two strategic projects for Algeria: the exploitation of the Gara Djebilet iron mine and the integrated phosphate project in Bled El Hadba. By 2026, two iron ore processing units will be commissioned, including one in partnership with Tosyali, capable of producing 2 million tons of concentrate per year. At the same time, work will begin on the largest phosphate processing infrastructure, with Sonarem in charge of mining and Sonatrach in charge of converting it into fertilizer. This project aims to produce 12 million tons of fertilizer annually. These initiatives mark a key step towards the autonomy of the Algerian steel industry and the strengthening of exports of processed products. From 2027 onwards, these projects are expected to contribute significantly to GDP and make the mining sector a major pillar of the national economy.
