On 26 August 2025, the Algerian president issued directives. These were followed on 2 September by an interministerial meeting. This meeting was led by the interim Prime Minister. The meeting set the framework for importing and renewing 10,000 new passenger buses. This urgent measure follows a deadly bus accident in Algiers that killed 18 people. In the short term, 5,400 buses over 30 years old will be replaced, followed by a further 28,000 over 20 years old. The overall goal is to modernise Algeria’s fleet of 84,000 buses. A gradual renewal plan is already underway, and the import of new or nearly new buses is now permitted under certain customs conditions. Discussions are ongoing regarding potential tax exemptions to be included in the upcoming finance law.
