SEMICA Chad 2026 – Cement industry: strengthening Algerian-Chadian cooperation discussed
On Wednesday, Industry Minister Yahia Bachir held a working meeting in N'Djamena with Chadian Minister of Trade and Industry Mathieu Guibolo Fanga, with whom he discussed ways of developing bilateral cooperation in the cement industry, on the sidelines of the International Mining, Quarrying and Hydrocarbons Exhibition (SEMICA Chad 2026), held from January 21 to 23 in the Chadian capital, according to a statement from the ministry.
The meeting, which was attended by the Algerian Ambassador to Chad, Fayçal Djaouti, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Algerian Cement Industry Group (GICA), Rabah Guessoum, as well as executives from the Chadian Ministry of Trade and Industry and the GICA group, follows on from the preliminary meeting held in Algiers on 18 December last year to examine prospects for cooperation in the cement industry, the statement said.
On this occasion, the avenues for developing the cement industry in Chad were examined by studying the available options, whether these involved implementing medium-term structural industrial projects or adopting practical and rapid solutions to meet immediate needs, particularly in view of the gap between current consumption levels and the requirements of development and construction, according to the same source.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the possibility of creating clinker grinding units, supported by Algerian expertise and supplied with raw materials from Algeria, to meet the needs of the Chadian market and strengthen local development in the cement sector, the statement added.
In this context, emphasis was placed on the importance of capitalising on Algeria's experience in the cement and building materials industry, particularly through the GICA group, which has considerable production and human resources as well as extensive expertise in this field.
The two parties also agreed to conclude a memorandum of understanding to define the general framework for cooperation, thereby enabling more in-depth technical discussions and the implementation of industrial partnership projects and joint projects to serve the mutual interests of both countries, while contributing to support industrial development, the statement concluded.
