In 2024, worldwide exports of fresh tomatoes reached $12.4 billion, but Algeria's contribution remains marginal despite its high production potential. According to Chabane Assad, founder of the firm Finabi Conseil, the country could transform this potential into real export leverage by structuring a dedicated industry around pilot clusters such as Annaba, El Tarf and Oued Souf.
It recommends installing a cold chain for export, creating packaging hubs, and introducing a national traceability and certification system. Target markets include Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Eastern Europe and the UK. Germany, Algeria's strategic partner, alone imported $1.7 billion worth of fresh tomatoes in 2024, illustrating the necessity to develop the organic sector, in line with expectations in sustainable agriculture.
Other proposed measures include the creation of a public fund to support agricultural exports and the launch of a National Agri-Export Agency to coordinate the strategy on a national scale.
