Algeria launches construction of a new refinery at Hassi Messaoud to boost energy self-sufficiency

The President of the Republic has stressed the importance of the Hassi Messaoud refinery project, which aims to increase the country's production of gasoline and diesel. This project is part of the national energy strategy, which has enabled the country to achieve self-sufficiency in petroleum products.

Scheduled to come on stream in 2027, the refinery will have an initial capacity of one million tonnes of fuel oil, gradually rising to 2.8 million tonnes. It will also produce 1.31 million tonnes of gasoline, and large quantities of propane, butane, kerosene and bitumen.

The project will generate over 10,000 jobs in the construction phase and 1,000 direct jobs in the operating phase.

The Prime Minister stressed that this refinery is a strategic project for developing hydrocarbons, enabling Algeria to strengthen its position in the oil market. He congratulated Sonatrach and all the players in the energy sector for their commitment to the construction of this key infrastructure.

Continuing his visit, the Prime Minister also inspected the Hassi Messaoud gas compression and reinjection station, due to come on stream in 2020 with a capacity of 24 million m³ per day, underlining its crucial role in maintaining the country's gas production capacity.
