President Abdelmadjid Tebboune welcomed the draft law reforming the highway code, emphasizing that it introduces rigorous measures to reduce accidents. This new text, comprising 193 articles that include more than 50 new provisions, covers all road users, including driving schools, drivers, vehicles, and control devices. The president requested that the amendments facilitate the work of the justice system and security forces, particularly by accrediting sworn officers responsible for inspecting vehicles and investigating accidents, to prevent falsification of technical reports.
He also ordered the implementation of periodic and random medical examinations for all drivers to verify their fitness to drive, and reduced driving distances for alternating drivers. Additionally, security officers will be equipped with technology that enables the electronic payment of fines, drug testing, and vehicle weight checks.
At the same meeting, the Council of Ministers approved a law on trusted services for electronic transactions and digital identification, as well as a decree ratifying the headquarters agreement between Algeria and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), with a view to opening a WIPO office in Algeria.
