In a statement to the press on the run-up of a study day for the regional citrus trade fair in the Centre region, Mr Nadji said that the development of this activity by several provinces, led by El Oued, El Menia and Ouargla, had enabled national citrus production to increase to more than 18 million quintals, compared with 16 million quintals during the previous agricultural season.
The area devoted to citrus production has increased by 5,000 hectares a year in recent years, according to the official, who stressed the importance of encouraging farmers to return to certain old varieties and to reduce imports of products intended for processing during the harvest period in Algeria.
Farmers are working to increase production by adopting intensive farming (700 bushes per hectare), but this will require them to sign contracts with processing units (producing juices, jams and related raw materials), expanding the marketing network and opening up new export routes, particularly to African countries, he added.
According to figures provided by the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Redouane Messaoudi, oranges cover 54,227 hectares (67.77%), followed by clementines on 17,263 hectares (21.57%), lemons on 5,833 hectares (7.28%) and mandarins on 2,577 hectares (3.22%).
The province of Blida tops the ranking in terms of production with 4 million quintals, followed by Chlef (1.7 million quintals), and Mostaganem in third place with 1.5 million quintals, according to the same official.
