In this regard, number two of the Iris Group explained that the delay in drafting and adopting the text was mainly due to changes in the Ministry of Industry leadership in recent years, which had each time postponed the deadline to a later date.
Guidoum nonetheless welcomed the commitment of the new Minister of Industry, Mr Sifi Ghrieb, who undertook to resolve this problem by entrusting his department's executives with the mission of taking charge of this issue, following a meeting with operators in the sector last Thursday. A second meeting was held on Saturday with the Secretary General of the Ministry, following which a working group was set up to speed up the resolution of the situation.
According to Guidoum, the new Minister has shown a real willingness to introduce effective regulation for the sector, which is lacking in the current specifications. "The current specifications are not even respected, which has led to the market being flooded with low-end TV sets equipped with C-grade slabs, the lowest in quality," he pointed out.
"These products do not meet health standards and represent a real danger for consumers due to their negative impact on the retina", he pointed out, insisting that his group remains "committed to offering quality products with 'A' grade slabs respecting international standards" while stressing that strict regulation is essential to protect consumers and clean up the market.
Originally scheduled for adoption in November 2022, the terms and conditions governing this activity have been significantly delayed, mainly due to the difficulties mentioned above. This delay impacted heavily the sector, leaving some twenty companies impatiently awaiting its adoption.
For some of these companies, directly affected by the decision to stop importing SKD and CKD kits, these specifications represent an essential condition for resuming their activities. This situation prolongs a period of uncertainty and further weakens a sector already facing multiple challenges. The absence of clear, appropriate regulation is not only holding back the resumption of industrial activity but also generating significant economic losses for the players concerned. However, we won't have long to wait to see whether the commitments made by the Minister of Industry will succeed in bringing this segment of activity out of its torpor.
