Market gardening: Algeria imports 95% of seeds

Algeria, which practically ensures its autonomy as regards the seeds of arable crops (cereals), imports 95% of those of vegetable crops, although the country is naturally very rich in plant genetic resources, informs us this Thursday the Algerian radio, which quotes Aissa Zeghmati, an expert in agronomic sciences.

"Seed, is the beginning of agriculture, the source of change and development all plant species. Seed is an important and even strategic point in a country’s food security,” explained Aissa Zeghmati.

"Globally, there are 10 companies that dominate nearly 75% of the global (seed) market with revenues of around $26 billion," he added.

Algeria has research institutes in this field, the expert in agronomic sciences stated that "Algeria has been able to develop its own seeds like field crops (cereals), where one is practically autonomous. For more than 25 years, we have managed to save the Algerian treasury something like $400 million."

It should be noted that Prime Minister, Aïmene Benabderrahmane, supervised the inauguration of the National Seed Bank on Thursday, 11 August 2022.
