The telecommunications sector (bill payments and credit top-ups with telephone operators and Internet service providers) still dominates the e-payment segment via the Internet, with 4.71 million of the 6.62 million transactions carried out in this segment.
However, all other sectors achieved appreciable growth rates, notably administrative services (+70%) and transport (+20%), while the sale of goods recorded modest growth of 9%.
Overall, since the launch of this payment method in 2016, the number of online transactions has exceeded 43.9 million, according to GIE monétique data.
The electronic payment regulatory authority counts some 510 web merchants as members of the interbank electronic system, 140 more than in the first half of 2023.
The total value of e-payments by electronic payment terminal (EPT) rose by 44% to 20.129 billion dinars.
As for payment by cell phone (using the QR code), the number of transactions carried out rose by 60% year-on-year, to 26.7 million operations for a total value of 19.6 billion dinars.
Mobile payment has been officially operational in Algeria since 2022. In the first phase, the service was introduced at the Banque Nationale d'Algérie (BNA) and Al Salam Bank Algeria, as well as Algérie Poste.
This new cardless payment method is based on QR code (Quick Response Code) reading technology, assigned by the merchant. It enables customers to pay for purchases, invoices, and other items instantly.
In addition, GIE Monétique's report shows an increase in the total number of ATM withdrawals from 85.7 million transactions in the first half of 2023 to 96.5 million in the same period of 2024, worth over 1,804 billion dinars.
