However, in recent years, efforts have been made to increase the visibility of Algerian products on the international market. Structural reforms have been introduced, particularly in the manufacturing sectors.
A new investment code and a port management system have been introduced to boost sectors capable of generating added value, such as agriculture and the agri-food industry.
Furthermore, the Algerian authorities have established a ministry dedicated to foreign trade and export promotion, with a view to harnessing the economic potential of businesses based in Algeria. This is also intended to lend greater credibility to the government’s public policy.
In 2023, Algeria’s exports totalled $37.8 billion, of which $5.1 billion was from non-hydrocarbon sources.
This reflects the competent authorities’ commitment to revitalising the productive sectors, a move that has been accompanied by the signing of the free trade agreement known as Zlecaf.
In 2024, non-hydrocarbon exports amounted to $4.3 billion. Despite a slight decline, this remains a significant figure that requires greater logistical support, particularly for exports to Africa, which is a promising market for Algerian products.
African markets are more receptive to Algerian products, unlike other economic areas such as the European Union, which imposes numerous restrictions on products from non-EU markets.
