Cement and clinker: Holcim El-Djazaïr accounts for 30% of Algeria's exports

Despite a highly competitive international cement market environment, Holcim El-Djazaïr, which specialises in the production of cement and its derivatives, has achieved a performance by exporting more than 3.4 million tonnes in 2023, representing 30% of Algeria's total exports for the two products (cement and clinker), according to a press release from the cement manufacturer, which stated that "this achievement represents a 7% increase on the 3.2 million tonnes recorded in 2022 and a 17% increase in turnover".

Holcim El-Djazaïr has chosen to focus its exports more on finished products and to reduce the proportion of semi-finished products. In 2023, 40% of its exports will be cement, representing an increase of 300% compared with 2022.

This proportion should continue to rise, reaching over 60% in 2024". To achieve this, the cement company's press release states, "the Holcim El- Djazaïr Group has released major investments, in particular the acquisition of a ship loader in 2023, representing an investment of 3.5 million euros".

"In addition, a new fleet of high-performance trucks has been acquired by the group, which has also undertaken the construction of new cement silos dedicated to exports at its plant in Mascara. Investments have also been made in white cement storage halls to handle larger vessels via the ports of Oran, Mostaganem and Arzew", it notes.

He goes on to say that "this result was made possible by the various non-hydrocarbon export promotion measures defined by the public authorities. However, Algeria has the capacity to export more than 10 million tonnes a year if the right measures are put in place, particularly in the logistics field, such as giving priority to ships dedicated to exports, extending cement storage facilities in ports and promoting rail transport, which will reduce CO2 emissions and minimise the risk of accidents".
