Cement and clinker: measures to boost exports

Cement was back on the government's agenda on Thursday. Under the chairmanship of Sifi Ghrieb, the interim prime minister, an interministerial meeting was held on Thursday to discuss the promotion of cement exports.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office announced the implementation of urgent measures to support the export of cement and clinker, following a meeting between several ministers, the governor of the Bank of Algeria, and economic operators. These measures include optimising the use of existing port infrastructure, enhancing storage capacity, and reducing logistics costs. In the medium term, proposals have been examined to streamline exports and guarantee product availability, in conjunction with future investments.

 

President Tebboune has ordered the designation of an Algerian port to be adapted to accommodate large ships, exclusively dedicated to cement exports, with the possibility of using floating silos. This initiative is part of the national strategy for economic diversification, excluding hydrocarbon products.

Algeria, now Africa's leading exporter and second in the Mediterranean, reached record levels in 2024 with an annual production capacity of 41 million tons, and a domestic consumption of around 23 million. The state-owned GICA group exported more than 6 million tons for $1.2 billion, while Holcim-Lafarge Algeria exported 3.1 million tons for $140 million. The goal is to capitalize on an exportable surplus estimated at 20 million tons per year, despite the logistical challenges to be overcome, particularly at the port level.
