In its annual update, the World Bank classifies Algeria as an upper-middle-income country for the second year running, joining a select group of eight African economies. This reclassification is the result of a comprehensive review of national economic data, including the updating of statistics in line with international standards and an increase in gross national income per capita. The Ministry of Finance attributes this development to economic growth, increased public investment and improved governance. The ranking also reflects progress in the coverage of the informal economy and public statistical methods. At the regional level, 35% of MENA countries are now classified as high-income, while the share of low-income countries in sub-Saharan Africa has fallen from 75% to 45%. The World Bank's ranking is based on gross national income per capita, adjusted for several economic indicators.
