A total of 600 exhibitors from 28 countries are taking part in this 21st event, 41% of them representing companies specializing in materials and equipment for the agri-food process. Algerian participation represents 27%.
As in previous years, the trade features the "Experts' Agora", a series of conferences on topics related to the agricultural sector. This cycle of meetings opened on the first day, with a presentation on organic farming and the importance of certification.
The talk was given by Brahim Seddiki, manager with the certification body Biocert. He explained that organic certification is a label that encompasses a series of requirements relating to the product's manufacturing process, its environmental impact, the products used, and so on.
From the outset, the expert deplores the lack of legislation on organic farming in Algeria. He believes that the sector would benefit from developing this segment, as there is a great deal of untapped potential.
There's a lack of information about food. Good labelling ensures good product marketing, says the expert. Brahim Seddiki gives the example of the Mauritanian market, which is in demand of Algerian agri-food products, but which are denied entry due to inadequate labelling, he points out.
"Our experience in the field has shown us that if you want to export, you have to rely on certification. We have certified a small company, Bomais, specializing in prickly pear processing. Thanks to this certification, the company was able to win a contract in the United Kingdom.
For organic farming to develop, the expert insists on the need to sell to Algerians. To this end, the Biocerts organization has created a database of certified and controlled companies and products.
