20 SNTF locomotives refurbished with cutting-edge technology

The National Railway Transport Company (SNTF) announced on Saturday that locomotives will gradually be brought back into service following their complete refurbishment and modernization, as part of a program involving 20 old diesel-electric locomotives, carried out by Algerian experts in the company's workshops.

According to a statement from SNTF, renovation work is being carried out in particular at the Mohammadia (AMF) workshops in Mascara and at the Rouiba main locomotive maintenance base (BPML) workshops in Algiers, in accordance with a technical programme aimed at improving the performance and reliability of the equipment.

National expertise and technology transfer

The SNTF specified that the project is part of a technology transfer and mastery initiative, since all operations were carried out by Algerian technicians and engineers specialising in equipment maintenance, modernisation and renovation, under the technical supervision of executives and engineers from the American group EMD (Electro-Motive Diesel), the world leader in diesel locomotive manufacturing.

Among the main improvements made, the locomotives benefited from the replacement of electronic control systems with the adoption of the modern EM2000 system developed by EMD, offering better control of the locomotive's various operational systems.

"This system also helps reduce fuel consumption thanks to electronic fuel injection, which reduces pollutant emissions while increasing traction power compared to the original engine," says SNTF.

The project also focused on improving the suspension system and traction motors, ensuring a more comfortable and smoother ride on the rails, notably through the installation of air conditioning in the cabins, thereby improving working conditions for drivers and the overall performance of the service.
