The El Hadjar complex at the heart of a new industrial project

On September 7 and 8, the El Hadjar steel complex in Annaba welcomed a delegation from the Malaysian industrial group Lion, led by its CEO William Nishang. This visit marks a new stage in the negotiations the Asian conglomerate and the Algerian authorities have been conducting since late December regarding an industrial partnership in the steel sector.

A delegation from the Malaysian Lion Group recently visited the El Hadjar steel complex in Annaba as part of a strategic partnership with Algeria. This rapprochement follows a series of high-level meetings since 2024, culminating in June 2025 with the signing of a memorandum between Lion Group and Sonatrach. The partnership plans to develop local resources, particularly iron from El Ouenza and Boukhedra, as part of a broader $8 billion industrial investment plan, including a future metallurgical complex in Boumerdès. In the short term, an action plan has been adopted to launch the first technical studies and lay the foundations for a joint venture with Algerian majority ownership. This project could mark a major revival for El Hadjar, centred on a modernized and sustainable steel industry.
