The partnership aims to manufacture electronic payment terminals (EPTs) in Algeria, with an annual capacity of 100,000 units. The announcement was made last Wednesday by Bank ABC Algeria during a press conference at the Moufdi Zakaria Palace of Culture in Algiers, as reported on Saturday, 13 December by Algerian radio.
This initiative is part of the national strategy to digitise payment methods, with the launch of MPOS (Mobile Point of Sale) solutions. These mobile payment terminals are tailored to the Algerian market and aim to be "more accessible, particularly for small businesses and street traders".
Currently, only 5% of retailers, or 1.6 million, use electronic payment terminals that accept bank card and Algeria Post (Edahabia) card payment. The cost of electronic payment terminals remains an obstacle for many retailers.
Only 5% of retailers use payment terminals.
Despite incentives and facilitation measures, results remain limited. These measures include legal requirements for the use of electronic payment terminals in commercial transactions, tax incentives, promotion of alternative digital solutions, integration of electronic payment into public services, and awareness-raising and training for stakeholders.
Through this partnership, the two parties "are combining their expertise and committing to actively contribute to strengthening the electronic payment ecosystem by modernising financial services for greater financial inclusion in Algeria".
AFS describes itself as "the regional leader in digital payment solutions, operating in more than 20 countries in the Middle East and Africa and providing services to more than 60 client banks". During the conference, it was clarified that "AFS is owned by 37 financial institutions, with majority control held by the Bank ABC group".
SSI is an Algerian start-up offering solutions for digitising financial and commercial transactions. "It offers services such as interbank mobile payments and the MPay app. Its solutions, which are 100% Algerian and comply with international security and quality standards, are designed for banks, merchants and technology partners."
In this partnership, Bank ABC presents itself as a "strategic facilitator leveraging its network, institutional expertise and role as a connector between public authorities".
