Sonatrach-Chevron: just a step away from the final signature

The commercial section of the hydrocarbon contract currently being negotiated between Sonatrach and the American company Chevron is the final step before the American oil giant effectively enters the Algerian gas market. Eighteen months after signing the agreement in principle for the development of the Ahnet and Berkine basins, both parties seem eager to move forward.

The American oil company Chevron has reaffirmed its strategic interest in the Algerian market by sending its executive director of business development to Algiers to accelerate negotiations on a hydrocarbon contract with Sonatrach. This meeting follows the agreement in principle signed on June 13, 2024, between the two parties.

Algeria, rich in conventional and unconventional resources, is attracting the attention of major US oil companies, notably Chevron and ExxonMobil. The new CEO of Sonatrach, Noureddine Daoudi, has made it his priority to finalize these partnerships to increase the country's gas production and strengthen its position on the international market.

Cooperation with American majors is a key lever for exploiting Algeria's energy potential, which holds the world's third-largest reserves of unconventional hydrocarbons, and thus establishing itself as a key player in the global energy sector.
