Italian company Ignazio Messina & Co has launched a new dedicated maritime service between Algerian ports and several European hubs (Italy, Spain, France), to boost trade in the western Mediterranean basin. The service, provided by the ship Libertas-H (443 TEU, 14 tons per container), will offer a bi-monthly rotation on the Fos-sur-Mer – Genoa – Barcelona – Algiers route.
This launch follows significant growth in trade between Algeria and Spain, particularly via the port of Castellón, as Algerian imports are projected to increase by 820% and Spanish exports by 162% in 2025. Port traffic between the two countries also increased by 137% in 2024.
This strengthening of maritime connectivity supports Algeria's strategy of diversifying exports beyond hydrocarbons by facilitating the export of agricultural and semi-processed products. It provides national exporters with a regular and reliable service to Europe, while contributing to the broader modernization of Algerian maritime transport.
