On the sidelines of the 15th Innovation Fair, held until 9 December at the National Polytechnic School of Oran (ENPO), Mr Belmehdi reported a 20% increase in patent applications in 2025, with 1,127 filings registered at the end of November, compared to the same period in 2024.
The official emphasised that this increase is part of a long-term trend: "Patent applications have been rising steadily for several years, reflecting the emergence of a national economy that is increasingly focused on knowledge and innovation," he said.
Referring to the changing figures, he recalled that 2024 had exceeded the 1,400 application threshold for the first time, with the majority of applications filed by Algerian researchers and inventors. In comparison, 1,100 applications were registered in 2023, compared to 600 in 2022.
According to Mr Belmehdi, this development is all the more significant given that "between 2012 and 2017, INAPI received only 200 to 300 applications per year".
He attributed this progress to the creation of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and Start-ups, as well as to awareness campaigns conducted in universities, which have strengthened the culture of protecting inventions among researchers and young innovators.
Regarding the most dynamic sectors, he indicated that parapharmaceutical and cosmetic products, particularly essential oils and new manufacturing processes, are leading the way, followed by mechanics and electronics. "These results reflect the efforts of a new generation of Algerian engineers and inventors, who are particularly active and creative," he said.
Mr Belmehdi finally mentioned "even more promising" prospects for 2026, noting that indicators for the first quarter of 2025 confirm that the upward trend is continuing.
