Finance: EBRD ready to “support Algeria”

On the sidelines of the 7th Cooperation and Partnership Summit between the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU), held on November 24 and 25 in Luanda (Angola), Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, met with the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Odile Renaud-Basso.

According to a ministry statement, a recent meeting provided an opportunity to review the cooperative relationship between Algeria and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), of which Algeria has been a shareholder since October 2021. EBRD President Ms Renaud-Basso expressed her willingness to support the diversification of the Algerian economy, with an emphasis on strengthening the private sector in key areas such as agriculture and renewable energy. Furthermore, during a visit in April, a senior European Commission official raised the possibility of mobilising European funding and announced ongoing discussions on opening an EBRD office in Algeria.
