The Rural Renewal strategy (2009-2014) and its development projects have benefited over 10 million rural inhabitants, helping to stabilize them after the exodus caused by the Black Decade. These actions included rural housing, water infrastructure, agriculture, and handicrafts. A "catch-up" program (2020) targeting the "Shadow Zones" enabled 30,000 projects to be carried out for 6 million inhabitants, focusing on improving living conditions (sanitation, transport, education, technology, etc.).
Historically, the uprooting of rural populations, which began with colonization, caused a profound rupture between the inhabitants and their land. Current policy seeks to revitalize these areas through a participatory approach involving local populations. In addition to major projects, micro-credit and micro-enterprise initiatives have promoted employment and income.
Despite the challenges, the programs have combined efforts to stabilize populations, boost the rural economy and diversify economic activities. Impact studies are planned to guide future initiatives.
