The Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kaouter Krikou, announced at a conference during the 4th edition of the African Start-up Conference (ASC) that her department is launching an Algerian-African training programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-enterprises.

Enhancing skills in green innovation

She explains that this initiative aligned with the guidelines set out by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to make Algeria a model for supporting young people and those involved in environmental projects. "To this end, we have strengthened our legislative and regulatory framework, which opens up new prospects for a sustainable world, in line with the aspirations of young people around the world in general, and in Africa in particular," she says.

This programme, explains Krikou, is aimed at young Africans innovating in the field of ecology, encouraging them to embrace environmental entrepreneurship while honing their green innovation skills through the structures of the National Institute for Environmental Training. She goes on to point out that Algeria has strived to strengthen support mechanisms for young environmental entrepreneurs through numerous programmes and by creating conditions conducive to transforming their ideas into practical solutions.

Algeria encourages innovation in the circular economy

The Minister of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-enterprises, Noureddine Ouadah, points out that Algeria "strongly" encourages innovation in the circular economy while promoting microcredit and micro-enterprises. "Entrepreneurship among young people, universities and knowledge are important for building a new economic model that we must make sustainable," he said, welcoming the presence of the World Bank to share experiences.

The World Bank's vice-president for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Ousmane Dione, spoke about the climate emergency affecting the entire African region, which is facing fires, land degradation, pollution and water stress. "Air pollution alone costs nearly 2% of regional GDP each year," he lamented. Nevertheless, these pressures, however serious they may be, can become catalysts for creating new markets, new economic models and new technologies.

The World Bank cites Algeria as an example

"The solutions presented at the ASC give us hope. I am optimistic because I see people on the ground, especially young people, testing ideas, creating start-ups, collaborating with universities, local authorities and communities. Hence the importance of the ASC, which brings together public institutions, entrepreneurs, operators and innovators in an environment where ideas evolve quickly," he observes. He points out that in several countries, natural ecosystems are not only ecological resources, but real economic drivers. In this context, he cites the case of Algeria.

"The fires have caused devastating human and environmental losses in Algeria. However, as demonstrated by the country's efforts to strengthen governance, warning and prevention systems, and support for sectors such as aromatic plants, honey and forest products, it is entirely possible to protect the environment while creating livelihoods. This proves that when governments provide guidance, entrepreneurs can take risks and investors will follow," he emphasises.

Thanks to Algeria's impetus, he continues, the entire region is rallying around this important issue. "Algeria has talented young people, committed institutions and an ecosystem rich in potential for nature-based solutions and green industries. What I see here, in your universities, your start-ups and your communities, convinces me that the transition is underway," he concludes.
