During a plenary session at the National People's Assembly, Interior Minister Brahim Merad denied rumours of a territorial division into nine regions comprising several provinces, describing them as "completely false". He pointed out that territorial decisions follow a studied and gradual process in line with regional needs. New administrative districts created after 2019 will gradually be promoted to delegated provinces and eventually to full provincial status.
The 2025 Finance Bill includes plans to create 1,200 budgeted posts and allocate funds to equip and manage new administrative structures. A dedicated commission has been set up to identify needs and monitor their development. The Minister also specified that the territorial division aims to reduce development disparities, starting with the South, the High-Plateaux and then the Northern regions.
