During the International Date Fair held at Safex from November 25 to 27, the issue of international certification for agricultural products, particularly dates, was widely discussed. Mr Seddiki Brahim, manager at Biocert, pointed out that out of hundreds of Algerian producers, only about 20 currently have internationally recognised certifications. Access to foreign markets, which is increasingly regulated, imposes strict standards on the entire production chain, posing a challenge for Algerian farms, which are often family-owned and small. The cost, complexity of procedures, and diversity of standards among countries are holding farmers back, even though certification is essential for increasing exports. Current date exports bring in between $60 million and $70 million per year, a figure that could be greatly improved thanks to the quality and diversity of national varieties. Farms can group to share certification costs, but this is not widely practised at present.
