Thus, building on developments in the hydrocarbons sector – where Algeria has just marked its strong comeback in this neighbouring country – Mauritania, for its part, is taking a crucial step towards strengthening its economic ties with Algeria.

An agreement signed in 2022 is finally on track for ratification

Indeed, at its meeting on Tuesday, 31 March 2026, the Mauritanian Council of Ministers approved a draft law authorising the ratification of the bilateral agreement on the international transport of passengers and goods and road transit between Algeria and Mauritania.

The bill in question was signed on 14 September 2022 in Nouakchott, but has since been awaiting consideration by the legislative bodies. The bill is expected to be submitted to the Mauritanian Parliament as soon as its ordinary session opens, with a view to its final adoption.

A unified legal framework to facilitate trade

According to the statement issued following the government meeting, the agreement aims to ‘organise and facilitate’ the movement of people and goods between the two countries by establishing a transparent and unified ‘legal framework’. The same source states that the agreement aims to ensure the “smooth flow of road transit”, to “encourage economic operators” to invest in this sector, and to strengthen compliance with safety and security standards on cross-border routes.

The ratification of this agreement comes at a time of particularly intense diplomatic activity. Both countries are currently preparing for the 20th session of the Mauritanian-Algerian Joint High Commission, due to take place shortly in Algeria. This coincidence in timing illustrates the ongoing momentum towards bilateral rapprochement between Algiers and Nouakchott.
