In a statement to the press on the sidelines of a working and inspection visit to the wilaya of El-Meniaa, Mr Cherfa explained that "the extension of irrigated areas, particularly in the south of the country, is now imperative to achieve the objectives set for the agricultural sector". Cherfa explained that "the extension of irrigated areas, particularly in the south of the country, is now an imperative to achieve the objectives set in the agricultural sector", adding that "work is underway to increase production capacity, through the extension of these areas which have reached 1.1 million hectares (250,000 hectares per year), in the application of the commitment of the President of the Republic, Mr Abdelmadjid Tebboune".
The three-year plan came into force during the current agricultural season to achieve the objectives set to achieve self-sufficiency and contribute to raising gross domestic product (GDP) to $400 billion, the Minister added, noting that the agricultural sector achieved, in the last season, a production amounting to 15% of GDP.
Grain storage
"The storage facilities recently launched across the country bear witness to the State's determination to develop the sector, particularly regarding cereal and seed production. These projects will boost storage capacity, particularly in the southern wilayas, which have seen significant production of strategic crops", he said, according to the APS agency.
During his visit, Mr Cherfa inspected the project to build two (2) local cereal storage centres in the commune of El-Meniaa and stressed the need to comply with all the standards in force for the construction of these centres and take delivery of them before the start of the harvest campaign for the current agricultural season.
Sunflower cultivation
The Minister also noticed the encouraging results of sunflower cultivation in a pilot farm belonging to a private investor, covering a 50-hectare area, where he stressed the need to expand the areas dedicated to this sector in the coming season, as part of the promotion of the national product from processing agriculture, such as oil and sugar crops, and pulses.
