Zitouni calls on importers of school supplies to shift to local production

news-detail

Opening a trade fair of school supplies at the Promenade des Sablettes (Algiers), Mr. Zitouni said that in order to achieve this goal, the Ministry of Commerce had put in place a "roadmap" providing for the tightening, from next year, of the conditions for granting authorizations for the import of school supplies to pave the way for local investment and international partnerships.

"We intend to convert the US$155 million for the import of school supplies into investments to create added value in Algeria," he said, recalling that Algeria produced around one (1) billion pens per year, which he said was enough "to meet the needs of the domestic market and export."

The Minister emphasized the need for importers and producers of school supplies to contribute to the success of the 2023/2024 school year by reducing prices, inviting them to bring their prices closer to each other.

International paper prices have dropped by 50% and shipping prices have dropped considerably, which should lead to lower prices for school supplies on the local market, he argued.

In addition, and in parallel with the launch of this fair, Mr. Zitouni revealed the organization of 83 trade fairs of school supplies across all the wilayas of the country and three (3) regional fairs in Algiers, Constantine and Oran to ensure the availability of products.
